Got Lettuce? Some easy plants to grow to start your first garden.
I am wanting to grow a garden this year. I grew up on a farm as a kid and we had fruits of all kinds. Raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, apples, peaches, plums, and apricots. We had an archway of Concord grapes in the front yard and you know those grapes that taste like cotton candy? We had a 100-year-old vine of those. Each one of us could eat a bundle of grapes off that vine every day, and half that vine would still not be harvested. Not to mention we had spearmint pop up around the property which I would put in my mouth like chewing tobacco.
Fond memories of having food that I could pick off the vine and eat fresh. Now being older, I want to get back to those fresher times and start a garden. The last time I ever successfully grew something though was when I was a Cloverbud in 4-H. This might be a rough start, so why not start with the easiest plants to grow?
Watermelon
Watermelon is a sweet fruit that is relatively easy to grow, they don’t require much maintenance besides consistent watering. It likes hot weather the summers can get pretty warm in Idaho so the plant won’t get killed if a heat wave comes through. But it does take a while to grow.
Lettuce
Lettuce is another easy plant to grow, it thrives in warm temperatures and grows rather fast, being able to start harvesting the plant in 30 days. On top of that, since lettuce is the leaf of the plants, you can harvest the same plant multiple times in a season.
Zucchini
I grew up eating zucchini bread and I think some fresh zucchini bread would hit the right spot this summer. And lucky for me, it’s an easy grow. It’s recommended that you plant the seeds when the soil is about 65 degrees. The plant loves the sun and needs consistent moisture.
